Why Phronetic Psychotherapy?
Phronetic Psychotherapy is a boutique group practice specializing in Asian, immigrant, and multicultural mental health.
Many of our clients are Asian Americans, immigrants, international students, first-generation professionals, entrepreneurs, and multicultural families. They often come to therapy carrying the weight of high expectations, family obligations, perfectionism, burnout, relationship stress, or the challenge of building a life between cultures.
Our therapists combine cultural understanding with evidence-based care. We provide online therapy throughout New York and offer services in English, Mandarin Chinese, and other languages.
We believe therapy should do more than reduce symptoms. It should help you understand yourself more clearly, strengthen your relationships, navigate life's challenges with greater confidence, and build a life that feels meaningfully your own.
The conversations many of our clients are already having with themselves
Identity, Culture, and Belonging
Why do I feel caught between different cultures, expectations, or versions of myself?
Why do I feel like I belong in more than one place, yet fully in none?
Why do I feel guilty for wanting something different from what my family imagined for me?
What parts of myself have I learned to hide in order to fit in?
Relationships and Connection
Why do I keep repeating the same relationship patterns?
Why do I feel responsible for everyone else's needs?
Why do I feel lonely even when I am surrounded by people?
Why is it so difficult to say no?
Achievement and Burnout
Why do I feel successful, yet still dissatisfied?
Why does achievement never seem to feel like enough?
Why is it so difficult to slow down?
Who am I when I am not achieving?
Meaning and Direction
What would it mean to live a life that feels more fully my own?
What matters most to me?
What comes next?
Therapists who understand both achievement and struggle
Many of our clients are Asian Americans, immigrants, international students, professionals, entrepreneurs, and multicultural families.
They work hard, carry responsibility, take care of other people.
From the outside, they often look successful. Inside, they may feel exhausted, anxious, lonely, stuck, or overwhelmed by expectations that never seem to end.
We know these experiences well.
Many members of our team are immigrants, bilingual professionals, or people who have spent their lives navigating more than one culture. We understand the pressure to succeed. We understand family obligations. We understand what it means to build a life far from home.
Our therapists come from different backgrounds and clinical traditions. What brings us together is a shared commitment to thoughtful, effective therapy.
We listen carefully. We think deeply. We take our work seriously.
Our goal is simple:
To help you suffer less and understand yourself more clearly,
And to build a life that feels more stable, meaningful, and fully your own.
Life asks a great deal of us.
Over time, it is easy to lose touch with what matters, what feels meaningful, and what feels like your own.
Wisdom comes from paying attention and slowing down…hey, glad to see you here.
We believe a good life is more than the absence of suffering.
It is possible to function well and still feel lost.
It is possible to be successful and still feel disconnected from yourself.
Thriving means building a life with strength and resilience; Flourishing means building a life with meaning.
We believe people deserve both.
At Phronetic Psychotherapy, many of our therapists have firsthand experience navigating immigration, cultural identity, family expectations, and the pursuit of success across different worlds.
We bring that understanding into our work every day.
We’re proud to offer a simple, stress-free process to get started with us.
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

“I believe good therapy should help you think deeply about your place in the world and how to change it. I also believe that empty talk without meaningful change is a waste of time and resources for both the patient and the therapist—and I take this responsibility seriously.”
Clarice Fangzhou Hassan, LCSW
Founder and CEO
Clarice embraces many meaningful identities—she’s a first-generation immigrant, a woman, an entrepreneur, an accomplished psychotherapist, a wife and mother, and an amateur pianist. But one of the identities closest to her heart is being a psychotherapy patient for 8 years.
Through her own journey, she’s learned how important it is not to remain stuck—whether in mental health struggles or in therapy itself. Her goal as a patient has always been to grow, heal, and move forward, and this deeply informs her approach as a leader.
Clarice is passionate about helping the therapists in her practice guide their patients toward meaningful change, healing, and eventually leaving therapy with their goals fully achieved.
You are bright and full of potential, but perhaps you’re unsure about what you truly want from life. You may feel sad, lonely, angry at times, and often without love. You’re not alone. We understand your desire to thrive—in your career, school, or professional life—and we also understand the fear that things might never change. But change is possible, and we are here to help.
Together, we’ll explore both your past and your present to help you better understand yourself and create meaningful change. Our approach is warm, open-minded, and collaborative, with growth rooted in both our work together and the courage you already hold within yourself.

-
You’re not sure what’s happening, but as a fully-grown adult who seems insightful and knows you absolutely don’t want to repeat your mom or dad’s story, you find yourself feeling, acting, and being like them. That’s a scary realization. We can help you break free and move forward.
-
You’re in New York City, attending a great school with a strong major, or earning a desirable six-figure salary, or even starting your own business. Everyone around you sees you as reliable and high-achieving—some even call you a role model. But inside, you feel broken and barely holding it together under the weight of all that stress. We can help you find balance.
-
Transitioning to a new place, parenthood, work, or the next phase of life—how exciting! At least, that’s what they tell you. Sure, you can find YouTube videos teaching you how to make your favorite beef stew, but this life transition feels vulnerable and personal, and there’s no guidebook to be found. Therapy can help you explore, endure, and ultimately flourish during this journey.
-
Take this literally or metaphorically—we mean it. Perhaps you feel like the most awkward and out-of-place person at a networking event, wishing you could run but feeling stuck there until the end of the evening. Or maybe you literally feel uncomfortable in your own skin, appearance, or body type. We can help you rebuild a deeper connection with yourself and support you in becoming your own best friend.
-
This is a tough one—you may realize that you can’t make time bend, but you deeply wish you could be someone else: calmer, happier, more content, less angry, and wiser. We can help you change certain aspects of your personality, but most importantly, we can help you find peace within yourself, understand yourself better, and stop being your own worst enemy.
-
You don’t like who you are or who your loved one is within your relationship. Or perhaps you don’t have a relationship but yearn deeply for one—you watch The Phantom of the Opera and feel like that lonely, doomed phantom, unable to love or be loved.
Therapy with us can help you build a strong set of tools to communicate, negotiate, compromise, and assert your needs effectively. Together, we can help you make your relationship loving and fulfilling again—or support you in confidently stepping into or out of one.
